Why Amad was sent off for Manchester United winner as referee decision explained

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher believes John Brooks should not be criticised for showing Amad a red card during Manchester United's 4-3 win over Liverpool.

The Ivorian was shown a second yellow card after he took his shirt off following his late-winner to send United into the FA Cup semi-final. Amad has been booked for an earlier incident after he blocked Alexis Mac Allister's attempt to take a free-kick.

The former Atalanta attacker will be available for selection at Wembley, when they look to book their place in the final against Coventry City, despite his red card as he will miss the next Premier League outing. Although, speaking post-match he revealed that he had forgotten about his initial caution four minutes before his goal.

FIFA's official laws state: "Players can celebrate when a goal is scored, but the celebration must not be excessive; choreographed celebrations are not encouraged and must not cause excessive time-wasting. Leaving the field of play to celebrate a goal is not a cautionable [worthy of a yellow card] offence but players should return as soon as possible.

"A player must be cautioned, even if the goal is disallowed, for: Climbing onto a perimeter fence and/or approaching the spectators in a manner which causes safety and/or security issues, acting in a provocative, derisory or inflammatory way, covering the head or face with a mask or other similar item or removing the shirt or covering the head with the shirt."
