Who is Rob Edwards? Lowdown on League Two boss tipped to replace Lee Bowyer at Birmingham City

Birmingham City have reportedly identified Forest Green Rovers boss Rob Edwards as a potential replacement for Lee Bowyer.

The Sun claims Edwards is on the 'wanted list' of Birmingham and Salford City, the League Two club owned by Gary Neville and his former Manchester United team-mates. It is being claimed that Blues could be looking for a successor to Bowyer, and Edwards' attractive style of play and Rovers' promotion to League One this season has earned him plenty of admirers.

Rovers have cruised to promotion this term, just four years after they entered the Football League. It has been a different story at St Andrew's, however, with uncertainty looming over Bowyer as a disappointing campaign nears a conclusion with Blues just two places above the Championship relegation zone in 20th with a left game to play.

So who is the man being touted as a future Birmingham City manager and what might he bring to the ailing club if appointed? The Birmingham Mail has take as look at Edwards' background and footballing development...

Edwards began his professional career as a youngster at Aston Villa. Born in Madeley, Shropshire, Edwards - a central defender by trade - made eight appearances for Villa between 1999 and 2004 with loan spells as Crystal Palace and Derby County sandwich in-between.

Edwards joined Wolves in 2004, scoring once and making 100 appearances until 2008 when he headed for Blackpool. Edwards three years at Bloomfield Road, where he was part of the Championship play-off winning squad. He also had a loan spell at Norwich as they finished runners-up in the Championship in 2010-11. Further moves to Barnsley - and loans to Fleetwood and Shrewsbury - followed before he retired from professional football aged
