What is the latest news with Lee Bowyer’s future at Birmingham City?

Birmingham City boss Lee Bowyer is set to meet chairman Wenqing Zhao today with his future in the balance at St Andrew’s, according to the former who spoke to BBC Radio WM.

The 45-year-old endured a productive end to his first season in charge of the West Midlands side, coming in during March 2021 and managing to guide them to safety after previously looking in danger under Aitor Karanka.

And he started the 2021/22 campaign off well too, even climbing into fourth place following an impressive 2-0 victory over Derby County in September, recruiting well in the summer and experiencing success on the pitch.

However, a steep decline since then has left the second-tier side in 20th position, a poor finish considering where they were in the early stages of the season and this has put Bowyer’s job in danger.

In fact, it has even been reported by Football Insider that the 45-year-old is set to be dismissed and this would be no real surprise considering their collapse, with a 6-1 away defeat against Blackpool last month proving to be their lowest point of the season.

The West Midlands outfit’s board have shown in the past that they are not afraid of making a managerial change and they may want to roll the dice once more this summer, with Forest Green Rovers boss Rob Edwards reportedly on their target list and Salford City also showing an interest in the 39-year-old.

But a potential takeover could possibly save Bowyer with a deal thought to be close to being complete by UK-based buyers, though it’s currently unclear whether a reportedly strained relationship between Technical Director Craig Gardner and Bowyer will have any effect on the latter’s future.
