Who is Mathys Tel? Bayern Munich teenager linked with Manchester United transfer

Manchester United are being linked with a transfer interest in Bayern Munich attacker Mathys Tel, and to those in Germany this speculation does not come as a surprise.

The 18-year-old has been making great strides in Bavaria over the past 18 months and has been likened to Kylian Mbappe in his style of play. There was great chatter about the teenager even before the age of 17, while he plying his trade at French club Rennes.

Tel made his debut for the Ligue 1 outfit in August 2021 aged 16 years, three months and 19 days to become the club’s youngest-ever first-team player. The Frenchman was initially a centre-back when he was scouted by Rennes aged 15.

However, club staff were keen to mould the 6ft talent into a devastating attacker and a little over a year later, his break in senior football came in an attacking role. Tel never managed to start any of his 10 senior games but did enjoy a brief cameo in a Europa League clash with Tottenham in September 2021.

Name: Mathys Tel

Height: 1.83m

Nationality: France (four under-21 caps, 2 goals)

Current club: Bayern Munich

Bayern made their move seven weeks after the player from Paris’ suburbs lifted the Under-17 European Championship title with France in June 2022, having captained the final. Three goals and an assist in Israel made up the mind of the German champions, who splashed just over £24m on him.

A month after signing, he became Bayern’s youngest-ever scorer at 17 years and 126 days
