Who is CJ Egan-Riley? The Man City starlet set to sign for Burnley & Vincent Kompany
Burnley will complete a double swoop for Manchester City defensive duo CJ Egan-Riley and Taylor Harwood-Bellis.
The pair will become the Clarets' third and fourth additions of the summer, with forward Scott Twine and centre-back Luke McNally having already arrived at Turf Moor. Harwood-Bellis has played in the Championship before and is set for a loan move, while Egan-Riley is lined up on a permanent.
Sources in Manchester suggest that the defender is out of contract at City and that Burnley have agreed a compensation deal with City, in order to avoid a tribunal. He is keen to get first-team football under his belt in the second tier, while working under Vincent Kompany was a huge pull factor for the youngster.
Primarily a central defender, he can also play at right back and as a holding midfielder, adding versatility to the Clarets ranks. He was a regular captain of City age group sides and part of the U18s title winning team in 2020.
Egan-Riley, born in Manchester, joined City's academy in 2010 and came through the youth system there. He has represented England from under-15 level through to U19s, while also making two appearances for Ireland U16s in 2018 - him qualifying through ancestry. His City first-team debut came last season, against Wycombe Wanderers in the EFL Cup - a game which City won 6-1 at the Etihad.
The defender showed his versatility in that game, playing at right-back in a 4-3-3 formation. Egan-Riley can also operate as a holding midfielder due to his technical ability, which could come in handy for Burnley over the course of a long, grueling Championship campaign.
