Who Huddersfield Town will really want to face in Championship play-offs

Huddersfield Town secured their place in this season’s Championship play-offs with a 2-1 victory over Barnsley on Friday night. First half goals from Jordan Rhodes and Harry Toffolo were enough for the Terriers, who in the process of securing three points, relegated Barnsley to League One.

Town can now sit back and play without pressure in their final two matches of the season while watching the drama unfold. Realistically, teams as far down to Coventry City in 11th will still be hopeful of securing a place in the top six which will make for an intriguing end to the campaign.

So with that in mind, here is a look at Town’s record this season against each of the sides vying for a place in the top six, assessing who could be their ideal opponents, and who they will most want to avoid based on the results.

Luton Town could be the next side to secure their place in the play-off places as prior to the weekend’s fixtures, they sit six points clear with three points remaining. Town have fared well against the Hatters this season, beating them 2-0 at the John Smith’s Stadium earlier this month.

They also earned a solid 0-0 draw against them back in the return fixture at Kenilworth Road, meaning Town are yet to concede in their two meetings this season. That could bode well if they meet at some point in the play-offs.

Town have actually played Forest three times this season as they travelled to the City Ground in the FA Cup last-16, where they were defeated 2-1. Less than three months earlier, the Terriers defeated Forest in the East Midlands thanks to a goal from Duane Holmes.
