Whitstable Town manager Jamie Coyle welcomes FA’s safety review following death of Chichester forward Billy Vigar | The 21-year-old had twice faced Town in the FA Cup in the days before his accident

Whitstable Town boss Jamie Coyle has welcomed the FA’s review into perimeter walls and boundaries around pitches following the death of Billy Vigar.

Former Arsenal forward Vigar died from a “significant brain injury” after colliding with the perimeter wall during Chichester’s Isthmian Premier game at Wingate & Finchley.

Vigar, 21, had twice faced Whitstable in the days before his accident, coming on as a substitute in a 1-1 FA Cup second qualifying round draw at the Belmont and playing the full match as Town won the replay 1-0.

Whitstable held a minute’s silence in memory of the striker before their third qualifying round win over Hungerford on Saturday.

The FA have launched an immediate review into safety and Coyle, a friend of Chichester coach Darin Kilpatrick, hopes to see action.

Coyle said: “Over the 26-year career I've had, I've seen so many injuries, bad injuries, through people getting barged or running into advertising boards, even those strong wooden ones and the metal ones, as well as the bricks.

"So it's something that we need to act on now. It shouldn't have taken a fatality for us to do that.

"But hopefully now we can, as a country, look at not only non-league, it's league clubs as well that potentially have some dangerous surroundings around their pitch.

"I spoke to Dabba (Kilpatrick), Chichester’s assistant manager, who's a good friend of mine, to send all our thoughts and prayers to him (Vigar) and his loved ones.

“It's horrible, considering a week ago, he's on the pitch playing against us.

“It's devastating but hopefully something now is going to be done for the future of the game.”
