Whitstable Town goalkeeper Dan Colmer on FA Cup replay win at Chichester City, a home tie against Hungerford Town in next round and maintaining league focus for now
Goalkeeper Dan Colmer sees no reason why Whitstable Town can't be a match for anyone on their day.
Jamie Coyle’s promotion-chasing Southern Counties East League Premier Division side have progressed through to the FA Cup third qualifying round, seeing off Isthmian Premier Chichester and Dulwich Hamlet in the process.
Forward Ashdon Day got the game’s only goal as Whitstable won their second qualifying round replay at Chichester on Tuesday.
An own goal had put them ahead in the original tie at The Belmont before they were pegged back late on in a 1-1 draw last Saturday.
Colmer believes their historic FA Vase victory has helped to create a fearless mentality in the squad.
“The Vase definitely helped for us boys that were here last year,” said Colmer.
“I don’t think we have the mentality to go into any game, thinking ‘Ah, it’s okay to lose.’. None of the boys want that and the management instil that into us, as well.
“In the Vase run, we came up against teams who were supposed to be the favourites for the whole competition and we beat them.
“There’s no reason why we can’t turn up on the day and be better than whoever the other 11 players are.
“The club’s brilliant. They put a coach on for Tuesday’s replay. A lot of boys left work early and got on the coach.
“It was a bit less of a burden for them, rather than driving two hours, getting out of your car, being all stiff and playing the game and doing the same again on the way home."
Even in the replay, manager Coyle was forced to take Theo Osinfolarin off early on and, having been replaced by Jake Abrahams, he also had to come off himself before the hour mark.
But the Oystermen adapted excellently to make more club history.
