Whitstable Town goalkeeper Dan Colmer excited to be part of Isthmian South East side’s new regime under manager Lee Martin and competing for the No.1 spot with teenager Josh Robson
Dan Colmer is relishing being part of the new Whitstable regime.
While many of the club’s Southern Counties East League Premier Division title-winning team have followed ex-boss Jamie Coyle and No.2 Matt Longhurst to Margate, goalkeeper Colmer has committed to stay for the Oystermen’s first campaign back at Isthmian South East.
There will be a new manager, Lee Martin, for Colmer to impress in pre-season, as well as a much-changed squad.
“From my point of view, I didn’t want to get complacent,” he explained.
“Jamie and Matt leaving - as much as we had so much success together - I kind of like the fact there is now something new at the club.
“It’s a bit of a different situation, with the new manager and new players. I’m really looking forward to the season to see what we can achieve.
“Obviously, the fans know me but, with the new manager and players, it’s a new start to show what I’m about.”
Martin, now 39, started his playing career at giants Manchester United and went on to captain the likes of Gillingham, Ebbsfleet and Dover.
He moved into the dugout in the last campaign, taking charge of Welling United and Ramsgate, but found himself out of work after he was harshly axed by the Rams in mid-April.
“I’m really excited,” said Colmer. “You can only learn from someone like that.
“It certainly helps that he was a player himself, as well, and isn’t someone who went straight into management.
“We had a similar thing with Jamie - but I think he takes it to a whole other level.”
Colmer sees how well some of the promoted teams - play-off winners AFC Whyteleafe and third-placed Jersey Bulls - fared at Step 4 as an example of what he believes the Oystermen can achieve.
