Whitstable Town boss Jamie Coyle targets first piece of silverware this season as Oystermen host FC Elmstead in Roy Vinter Respect Charity Shield game

A first piece of silverware this season will be on offer for Whitstable on Saturday.

Jamie Coyle’s Southern Counties East League Premier Division Oystermen host Division 1 team FC Elmstead for the Roy Vinter Respect Charity Shield, a match which will pit the two best teams in terms of respect last season against one another.

It’s a game manager Coyle, who planned to watch FC Elmstead play in midweek with No.2 Matt Longhurst, won’t take lightly.

He said: “Myself and Matt are going to watch the game to make sure we’re fully prepared.

“Come 5.30pm on Saturday, we want our first piece of silverware of the season on the table and want to let that be the building point of what we want to try and achieve this year.

“It’s a really important game for us. I know people will say ‘It’s only a Charity Shield’ but it’s an opportunity to get our first trophy of this season.

“We’ll do everything we can to make sure we’re prepared.”

Whitstable produced an FA Cup shock last weekend as they stunned early Isthmian Premier high-fliers Dulwich Hamlet - who finished the first qualifying round tie with nine players - grabbing a stoppage-time winner to complete a comeback 3-2 victory.

But the former Dartford and Folkestone winger was sent off before the break and Whitstable made their extra man count as goals from Dean Grant and Javaun Splatt squared the tie.

Hamlet were reduced to nine men when Nyren Clunis saw red but had a chance to regain the lead, only for goalkeeper Dan Colmer to keep out substitute Anthony Cook’s penalty.

Whitstable completed a superb comeback when Splatt’s second goal made it 3-2 in the sixth minute of added time.
