Neighbour fans have been in mourning since Channel 5 confirmed it will stop airing the soap this year.

The long-running Australian series is reliant on funding from the UK broadcaster, so the decision could spell the end for Erinsborough altogether.

Some of Down Under's biggest stars started out on the show, including Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan - who has pleaded for the show to be saved along with legions of fans.

Margot Robbie and Natalie Imbruglia also got their big break on the show, which has been on our tellies for over three decades since it first aired in 1986 on BBC One.

Confirming the news on Sunday, a Channel 5 spokesperson said the show had been a much-loved part of its schedule for more than a decade.

"We'd also of course like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years," they said.

"We recognise that there will be disappointment about this decision, however our current focus is on increasing our investment in original UK drama, which has strong appeal for our viewers."
