Where Scott Brown ranks among Celtic greats as former skipper put forward for illustrious position

John Hartson reckons Scott Brown falls short of being Celtic's greatest captain ever - but says there's no shame in losing out to Billy McNeill.

Brown won ten league titles in his 14 years at Parkhead before he left to join Aberdeen in the summer.

His move to Pittodrie didn't quite go to plan and he terminated his contract on Tuesday after a tumultuous year as player-coach.

He followed Stephen Glass out the door and is currently considering his next move.

A return to Celtic as a coach has been mooted and he'd be welcome with open arms after his service as a player.

And Hartson reckons that while he isn't their greatest ever captain, he's a close second to 'Cesar' himself.

He said on Go Radio: "The great Billy McNeill lifted the holy grail, the European Cup in 1967. I wouldn't put Scott there, I'd put him close second in terms of captains with his trophy haul.

"Billy is above everybody. He's not called 'Cesar' for nothing.

"But what Scott did, the four Trebles, more European games than anybody else for Celtic. It's about opinions but if you're looking at trophies and success then Scott has to be right up there."
