When will England's Euro 2024 squad be announced? Manchester United's Kobbie Mainoo awaits fate

Gareth Southgate will announce a training squad on May 21, two days after the Premier League season concludes.

The size of the squad has not been confirmed but it is likely to be slightly bigger than the 23 allowed for the tournament itself.

This training squad will be involved in England's warm-up matches for the tournament against Bosnia and Herzegovina at St James' Park on June 3 and Iceland four days later at Wembley.

After these warm-up matches Southgate must finalise his squad for the European Championship by June 8, with the likes of Kobbie Mainoo hoping to be given a chance after his terrific breakthrough campaign at Manchester United.

The England boss will not have the same luxury of picking a 26-man squad as he did for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and the previous Euros in 2020.

Southgate will only be allowed to take 23 players to Germany this summer. This reduction is something he has admitted will require "a different sort of thought process".

Southgate has also said that he can "take far fewer gambles than we were able to for the last two tournaments where it was 26".

He added: “The size of the squad makes it a different sort of thought process because you've had that leeway in the last couple of tournaments to take players that weren't going to be fit for the first couple of games."

With the competition for places for a seat on the plane to Germany expected to go down to the wire, the 23 players Southgate selects will then open England's campaign against Serbia on June 16 in their opening group-stage match.
