When DWP PIP payments could be replaced by vouchers as spotlight set to fall

As Parliament sets to end its recess next week, concerns are once again being raised over potential changes to benefits. In particular, Personal Independence Payment (PIP) changes were put forward in a recent consultation from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

The consultation, which was launched by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, was coupled with a Modernising Support Green Paper which detailed some of the changes that were being considered. One of the key proposed changes was the replacement of regular payments with vouchers and one-off grants. Roughly three million people in the UK currently claim PIP.

The benefit is designed to provide extra financial support for those living with a disability and have difficulty carrying out everyday tasks. It is currently delivered in two parts - a standard and an enhanced rate - which could see claimants receive as much as £184.30 each week.

In the Green Paper, it was explained that the DWP wanted to look into "alternative approaches" in supporting PIP claimants with the vouchers being proposed to help contribute towards very specific costs such as spending on appliances, aids, or services.

However, it's important to note that the consultation, which ended on July 22, was launched by the former Tory government which means that the current Labour government may scrap the proposed changes entirely. While this has not been officially done, announcements from the Labour government in regard to PIP could happen as soon as next week.

From Monday, September 2, Parliament will rejoin following a summer recess. This means that discussions around major issues and government policy will begin once again.
