DWP PIP payment update explained ahead of major social security review

People claiming personal independence payment (PIP) may see a reduction or halt in their benefits as the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) steps up reviews to check the validity of claims. It comes amid expectations of significant changes in the social security system.

These adjustments are likely to be highlighted in Labour's first Budget. And that is set for the end of October.

Records from the DWP since 2016 show roughly 3.1 million PIP claims have gone through reassessment. The PIP is designed to help cover the added financial costs that come with disabilities or long-term health conditions, offering up to £737 every four weeks, an amount near to £9,500 per year. With new applications averaging about 70,000 each month, the government is considering major reforms due to "unprecedented" demand.

Following the Spring Budget, where the previous government provided extra funding to the system, officials are now accelerating the review process. This not only aims to speed up the assessment of fresh applications but also to tackle the backlog of cases in need of re-examination.

Despite ongoing reviews, current PIP recipients are expected to continue receiving their benefits unaffected, even after passing the expiration of their original claim period. Citizens Advice offers crucial information for individuals receiving PIP, warning that payments can be stopped or reduced by the DWP for several specific reasons, reports Wales Online.
