What the play-off final means for Leicester City as two transfer targets face off

The Championship play-off final could have an impact on Leicester City’s transfer plans no matter who the winner is at Wembley.

Huddersfield and Nottingham Forest go head to head on Sunday for a place in the Premier League. For the Terriers, they would be returning after relegation just three years ago, while for Forest, it would end more than two decades away from the top flight.

On both teams there is a player City have been linked with this summer, and in positions they are prioritising as part of their summer refresh. For Huddersfield, it’s centre-back Levi Colwill, and for Forest, it’s right winger Brennan Johnson.

There are pros and cons whichever way the result goes. For example, if Huddersfield lose, then City may stand a better chance of bringing in Colwill.

Any deal is dependent on Chelsea’s transfer activity this summer and their pursuit of potentially two centre-backs, but if the teenage defender is to be allowed to leave, it would help City’s cause if the Terriers are not in the Premier League. If they did go up, they may be first in the queue to take Colwill on a permanent deal, but if they stay down, it is likely the 19-year-old will seek a Premier League club to go to.

The situation is arguably more extreme for Johnson. If Forest get promoted, there seems very little chance that he would leave his boyhood club, given they rejected offers for him in January.

But if they remain in the Championship, there may be a battle for Johnson’s signature, with plenty of Premier League clubs involved.
