What should St Johnstone fans expect from loan signing Tom Sang?

It would be fair to say that deadline day signing Tom Sang arrives at McDiarmid Park as a bit of an unknown quantity.

But The PA has teamed up with Glen Williams, Cardiff City correspondent for Wales Online, to shed some light on what Perth fans should expect from the 22-year-old.

Sang, with Saints until the end of the season, is likely to operate in a right wing-back role for Callum Davidson but this is a player who ventures north with versatility.

“It’s actually quite an interesting one,” Glen says. “You ask any Cardiff fan and you would get short odds on them telling you they would like to see him operate in the middle of the park.

“When he first broke into the first team he played across the middle and on the wings, struggling really to nail down a position.

“But he is technically very proficient and appears to possess all the abilities one needs to be a top central midfield player.

“Mick McCarthy eventually plonked him in at right wing-back and, to his credit, he did really well. Most thought that was only a stop-gap until Cardiff signed a wing-back, but it appears Sang himself now sees that as his primary position.

“Personally, I think he has the ability to affect things higher up the pitch, but there is nothing to suggest he won’t be a very good wing-back, should St Johnstone play him there.”

Saints’ success last season was often aided by wing-backs showing great energy and a desire to get forward into the box, or indeed crossing positions. Sang is set to tick those boxes.

Glen added: “There was a reason why Cardiff fans were most disappointed with Sang’s exit out of the four loanees who departed on deadline day.
