What Raphael Varane did at full-time after Manchester United’s collapse vs Liverpool

Raphael Varane scolded his Manchester United teammates at full-time following their 7-0 loss to Liverpool after a handful set off towards the tunnel instead of going over to the away fans after the shaking of hands.

Six second-half goals saw the visitors slip to their worst defeat against Liverpool and their heaviest loss in 92 years on Sunday evening. The result comes at a time when United have been performing well under Erik ten Hag having lost just once since November before the clash.

However, despite a fairly even first half, a rampant Liverpool exposed a shaken United to condemn them to a landmark humbling. By full-time, the away end was half-empty but those still present still applauded their team.

Scott McTominay and Tyrell Malacia clapped towards the travelling support from a distance without walking up to them before heading down the tunnel. Young substitutes Alejandro Garnacho and Anthony Elanga were about to do the same before Varane shouted and beckoned them to face the away support.

Assistant Steve McClaren then called McTominay and Malacia out from the tunnel to join the rest of the team in acknowledging the fans in the Anfield Road end. Four goals from two formerly-linked players contributed to the scoreline for Liverpool.

Cody Gakpo got the opener before scooping home his second either side of half-time while Darwin Nunez got two second-half goals to add to Mohamed Salah’s brace and Roberto Firmino’s final dagger blow.

United had conceded seven goals in their previous eight matches before the clash, with David de Gea becoming United’s all-time clean sheets keeper in last Sunday’s 2-0 Carabao Cup final triumph over Newcastle.
