Sevilla appoint new manager before United meeting

Sevilla have moved quickly to appoint a new manager before their Europa League meeting with Manchester United next month, with Jose Luis Mendilibar stepping into the dugout.

With a spot in the semi-finals at stake, United have been drawn against Spanish opposition for the third stage running after overcoming Barcelona and Real Betis on their way to the last-eight. Sevilla defeated Turkish side Fenerbahce to book their place alongside United in the draw.

Despite leading Sevilla through to the latter stages of the competition, Jorge Sampaoli has paid the price for poor domestic form and was sacked on Tuesday morning. Sampaoli had suffered five defeats in his last seven matches at the helm and has now been replaced by Mendilibar.

France manager Deschamps sends message to Varane

France manager Didier Deschamps has revealed his disappointment over Raphael Varane's retirement from international football, with the Manchester United defender instead opting to focus on club football.

Varane called time on his glittering international career in February, with his decision coming as a shock to many people, especially as he was expected to be named France's new captain after Hugo Lloris retired.
