What Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong did after winning La Liga title with Barcelona

Frenkie de Jong was pictured smiling and embracing Barcelona president Joan Laporta after his side won La Liga on Sunday night.

Manchester United agreed an €85million fee with Barcelona for De Jong and reached a verbal agreement on personal terms last summer, but the midfielder's wage deferral stalled the deal and he eventually stayed at Camp Nou.

Although De Jong publicly pledged his commitment to Barcelona last year, he privately informed Erik ten Hag he would be prepared to join United and it's possible the club could reignite their interest in the midfielder in the coming weeks.

De Jong remains admired at Old Trafford, but he looked visibly delighted after winning his first La Liga title at the weekend and a photo showing the player embracing Barcelona president Laporta has been shared from the dressing room.

The 26-year-old said earlier in the season that he felt 'pressure' from Laporta to leave Barcelona during the last summer window. Laporta, who's in the middle of his second term as Barcelona president, is understood to have pushed for the sale of De Jong.

Barcelona are currently working under tight financial constraints and a sale of De Jong would have raised significant funds.

De Jong has made 25 starts in the league this season and he's been considered an important part of Xavi's plans. He spoke to Barca TV after winning the title on Sunday night and he is set to be quizzed about his future again this summer.

His relationship with Ten Hag remains healthy and he's contracted with Barcelona until 2026.
