What is the latest with Sam Johnstone’s situation at West Brom as Chelsea eye Kepa replacement?

With his contract set to expire in June, and with West Brom seemingly making no progress in agreeing fresh terms, Sam Johnstone could leave The Hawthorns this summer.

The Baggies shot-stopper, who travelled with England during their Euro 2020 campaign, has appeared 30 times for the Midlands club this season, keeping 13 clean sheets and conceding just 25 goals.

Despite the numbers impressing, it has not been a good season for the Baggies, with Steve Bruce’s side falling out of the play-off picture in recent weeks.

Chelsea have emerged as one of a whole host of top-tier teams who have been credited with an interest with Johnstone, with journalist Simon Phillips suggesting that the 28-year-old is currently being monitored by the European champions.

Phillips’ initial report has suggested that Chelsea are looking to find a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga for when the summer transfer window opens its doors.

It has been reported that Kepa himself is keen on a move away from Stamford Bridge, with the 27-year-old looking to reignite his international career with Spain.

Sky Sports pundit Carlton Palmer has weighed in on the future of Johnstone, in a conversation with Give Me Sport, with the former Baggies midfielder not expecting to see a move to a club where he is likely to sit on the bench, citing the upcoming World Cup as to why.

It remains to be seen what the immediate future holds for the 28-year-old, with Johnstone knowing that remaining in the Championship will hinder his chances for World Cup selection.
