Billy Sharp makes bold Sheffield United promotion claim

Sheffield United skipper Billy Sharp insists that they haven’t given up on a top two finish as they prepare for the final 11 games of the season.

The Blades have been transformed since Paul Heckingbottom was appointed, with the former Barnsley chief taking the side from the bottom half of the table to fifth.

Whilst they are still in a battle to remain in the top six, Sharp explained to the Sheffield Star that the group are looking up, as they target second-placed Bournemouth who they trail by five points, but the Cherries do have two games in hand.

“It’s about staying in there and trying to put pressure on second place. I know Bournemouth have got games in hand but they’ve dropped points again, so we’ve just got to keep winning our games.

“We know everyone is starting to play each other now. So as long as we’re not the ones dropping points, then we can keep that run going.”

As Sharp mentions, Scott Parker’s side have been inconsistent in recent weeks, which includes dropping two points to bottom of the table Peterborough in the week as they drew 1-1.

The verdict

This shows that confidence is high in the Sheffield United camp and you can understand why they are looking up.

Of course, someone as experienced as Sharp knows that things can change quickly in football but the Blades are in a good place right now with real momentum as we approach the crucial part of the campaign.

Despite all that, a top two finish does seem a long shot, but if they can keep getting results, combined with the others slipping up, then it can’t be ruled out.
