What Ederson injury update means for Man City - and Pep Guardiola's verdict on his replacement

Manchester City will be forced to manage without Ederson being available for selection for the foreseeable.

The goalkeeper suffered an injury during City's 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday at Anfield in the Premier League contest. Ederson sustained the injury while giving away a penalty in a challenge on Darwin Nunez following a backpass from Nathan Ake.

Ederson stayed on the pitch for the resulting penalty which was converted by Alexis Mac Allister for the home side. However, the Brazilian was unable to continue and was substituted in place of Stefan Ortega.

Now Ederson faces between three and four weeks on the sidelines as he recovers from the injury. A large portion of that will be taken up by the international break, but the 30-year-old still looks set to miss several important matches for Man City.

The first City fixture that Ederson will miss will be this weekend's FA Cup quarter-final against Newcastle United. The Brazilian was unlikely to feature in the game anyway, with Guardiola preferring to use Ortega in the domestic cup competitions.

After that, City will have a two-week hiatus before returning to top-flight action on March 31 against Arsenal. Ederson looks almost certain to miss that fixture unless he recovers quickly over the international break.

After that City will face Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium on April 3, where it remains uncertain if Ederson will be available. That weekend will then see City travel to face Crystal Palace on April 6.
