Aston Villa got back to winning ways in the Premier League by beating Norwich City 2-0 at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon.

Ollie Watkins opened the scoring just minutes from half-time before Danny Ings doubled Villa's advantage in second half additional time. The win relegated Norwich after Burnley beat fellow strugglers Watford, but Smith claimed post-match that there was a sense of inevitability about the club's relegation.

Gerrard opted to bring Ings on to the pitch when Leon Bailey limped off with an ankle injury five minutes before half time, even though Emiliano Buendia and Bertrand Traore were both natural replacements for the right winger. The Villa boss wanted to change the shape of his team and give Norwich's centre-backs another problem with the introduction of the former Southampton striker.

Ings made an instant impact by setting up Watkins' opener, before he got in on the act himself with his first goal since March. He changed the game for Gerrard and the Villa head coach was delighted with his and Watkins' contributions.

Gerrard said: "It helps when you’ve got top strikers. Danny came on and played really well. I get the question a lot if they can play together and I thought we looked a lot better with both of them on the pitch.

"Ollie’s finish was ruthless. In terms of the collective I’d like to have more killers in the team, we had too many opportunities today and only only scored a couple of goals on the back of it.
