What David de Gea told Ander Herrera about his Manchester United future in private chat

Ander Herrera says David de Gea told him he is “not worried” about his Manchester United future despite uncertainty over his status as No.1 next season.

Erik ten Hag has refused to confirm the 32-year-old as the preferred pick going forward despite being on the cusp of a reduced-terms renewal having picked up the Premier League Golden Glove this month.

De Gea - whose current deal expires next month - has been at fault for several goals this season with mistakes against Brentford, Sevilla and West Ham costing United dearly. A goalkeeper is not thought to be high on Ten Hag’s wish list with other priority areas needing reinforcement but a new summer arrival is still a possibility.

Former United star Herrera has revealed he frequently speaks with De Gea, albeit is yet to ask him about his contract situation. However, he did reveal that the United shot-stopper is not fearful about his future at Old Trafford.

Speaking to Manchester United’s Scandinavian Supporters' Club, Herrera was asked whether his friend will stay at the club for a few more years. “I think [so],” he said.

“I didn’t ask him if he’s going to sign a new contract, but I guess he’s going to do it. He cannot finish his time at Manchester United, even more so when he’s at a good age for a goalkeeper, when he has given the team victories in some moments of this season.

“So I have a lot of confidence in David. I speak with him almost every week, every month, and he’s not worried. He has so much confidence in himself and he’s going – I hope he’s going – to sign a new contract.”
