Weston grabs historic seventh medal for overall World Cup silver

Britain's Matt Weston rocketed to historic World Cup overall silver with his fifth gold of the season in Innsbruck. The 25-year-old slid to victory in a time of 1:40.39 to equal double Olympic champion Lizzy Yarnold for the most medals won by a British athlete in a single season at seven.

Ad Weston was joined on the podium by teammate Marcus Wyatt whose silver medal secured him overall bronze. Olympic champion Christopher Grotheer of Germany secured overall gold with a storming second run in Innsbruck that saw him snatch bronze. Britain were set for a clean sweep after the first run with all three athletes in medal positions, Weston leading the charge by 0.17 seconds over Wyatt.

But an incredible second run by Grotheer edged Craig Thompson out of the medals by just 0.03 seconds. Weston's victory concluded a highly competitive skeleton World Cup season with Grotheer taking overall gold by just 51 points.
