Western Province skin Lions in Currie Cup attacking show of force

Western Province may have scored just one try more than the Lions (five to four) in the game but the Capetonians showed their scintillating attack in the Currie Cup, which has also been the mark of their senior Stormers side in Europe.

As a result of some slick play and passing, Province's Currie Cup campaign got off to a fine start with a 44-28 bonus-point victory over the Lions at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Some familiar weapons came out for the team John Dobson decided to coach himself - instead of deferring to others like the other three United Rugby Championship franchises - such as Clayton Blommetjies, Suileman Hartzenberg, Angelo Davids and Scarra Ntubeni.

With flyhalf Kade Wolhuter at the wheel, Province seldom looked like they were never going to convert, save for a few missed opportunities, especially in a potent 34-point first half. 

Not that the Lions were passive either. They endeavoured to show that traditional Lions offload game but with a squad significantly more junior than WP, they were always going to face a tough test.

Western Province made a dream start when they won a penalty for the tackler not rolling away and they opted for touch seven metres out. The maul worked to fine effect and Ntubeni powered over at the back of it before Wolhuter added the extras.

The Lions responded with a try of their own after a brilliant break by Boldwin Henson and he managed to get it in the left-hand corner. Vaughan Isaacs added the extras, levelling things up on the scoreboard.
