Fourth defeat for Bulls as Griffons come up trumps with historic Currie Cup win

In a match that ebbed and flowed throughout, the Griffons came out on top in their bottom-of-the-log battle against the Bulls in Welkom on Friday as they ran out 32-28 winners.

The home side opened the scoring five minutes into the encounter thanks to Soso Xakalashe's try, which Jaywinn Juries converted.

Following a powerful rolling maul by the Griffons in the 10th minute, the Bulls were penalised, allowing Juries to land a penalty and extend that lead to 10-0.

After a period of extended possession in the Griffons' half, Wandisile Simelane ran a perfect angle on a cutback in the 22nd minute to score near the posts for the Bulls.

Johan Goosen converted to cut the Griffons' lead to 10-7.

That was soon 13-7 when Juries knocked over another penalty three minutes later.

The Bulls, however, were starting to find their way into the match and hit the lead when No 8 Muller Uys crashed over from close in.

Goosen's conversion gave the Bulls a 14-13 advantage in the 30th minute.

Jan-Hendrik Wessels benefited from some neat play by Bulls scrumhalf Keagan Johannes to score a converted try under the posts as the visitors extended their lead to 21-13 with five minutes left in the half.

The Griffons, however, hit back on the stroke of halftime thanks to flanker JJ Pretorius, who smashed his way over the line after a break by flyhalf Duan Pretorius.

Juries added the extras as the Griffons trailed by one point at 21-20 as the players made their way into the shed.

The Griffons started the second half the stronger of the two teams and were rewarded for their endeavour when Jaco Willemse scored following a rolling maul.

Juries' accurate boot added the conversion as the Griffons now lead 27-21 in the 53rd minute.
