West Lothian youth football team end season in style with treble success

Blackburn United’s under-16s boys finished off their remarkable season in style by lifting the West Lothian YAFC County Cup and completing a treble.

United had already tasted League Cup success by defeating Airdrie earlier in the season and pipped them to the title last week when they picked up the points in a winner-takes-all clash between the sides.

And they came out on top once more at the weekend when they grabbed a 2-1 win over Airdrie in the County Cup final at West Calder United’s Hermand Park.

Callum Newall had given United the lead, only for an own goal to take the match back to all-square.

However, United would have the final say when Corey Kirk’s wonderful free-kick fired them back in front for a second time as they went on to seal a brilliant treble success.

Delighted coach Gavin Wallace said: “Callum gave us the lead but an unfortunate own goal cancelled that out before half-time.

“Corey was man of the match and scored a terrific free-kick to win it. We were playing against a really strong wind in the first half so going in at 1-1. We were confident we would kick on in the second half and that’s what we did.

“We dominated after the break and arguably could have scored more. Myself and the rest of the coaching staff are very proud of the laddies. They have had a terrific season.”

He added: “To win the treble at any level is a remarkable feat, but with a 100 per cent record in the league

and winning both cups, I have run out of words to describe them.”

The club had further success at the weekend as the under-16 girls defeated Spartans to win the Regional League Cup and the under-13 boys lifted the Tam Agnew Memorial County Cup trophy.
