West Lothian basketball aces set for Scotland under-16 duty

Four members of the Scottish Cup winning West Lothian Wolves under-16 girls’ squad have received call-ups to the national team.

Team-mates Rebecca Douglas, Sofiia Petriashvili, Mia Sokoluk and Leah Williams are part of the Scotland set-up travelling to Dublin this week as part of the Four Nations tournament in Ireland.

The young Scots will battle it out with England, Ireland and Wales during the competition.

And it’s not just the club’s players who have been recognised as coach Stephen McCall has been named assistant coach – as has former Wolves player Erynn Legge.

It’s just rewards for the quartet who have been part of a so-far unbeaten Wolves season which was highlighted by Scottish Cup final success over the Falkirk Fury in February.

It’s a first national squad call-up for Williams, who admitted that it was an “amazing feeling” to receive the news that she’s be representing her country.

Speaking to the Courier, she said: “It’s an opportunity I’m really looking forward to. It’s my first time in a Scotland squad so it was an amazing feeling to be told that I had made the team.

“The Wolves have had such a brilliant season and it’s great to have four players as well as a coach going over to Ireland and there are some girls who missed out that I’m sure are good enough to be in the squad.

“It shows the talent within the team and I’m delighted for them all. For me, it tops off what has been a great season.”

Leah added: “The games will be tough but we will go into them with confidence and it will be a great learning experience for us all.”
