West Ham: Under-fire ace 'still key man for Moyes' at London Stadium

Aaron Cresswell remains a key player for David Moyes despite the West Ham manager hoping to sign another left-back this summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Cresswell has been an important player for Moyes since he signed back in 2014, but his place has come under threat following some damaging mistakes in recent weeks.

The 32-year-old has been West Ham’s first choice left-back from the moment he arrived from Ipswich eight years ago, making 291 appearances in all competitions.

Cresswell has enjoyed another stellar campaign for the Hammers, chipping in with two goals and seven assists in his 40 games.

But his season has taken a sudden turn for the worse in recent matches. In the Europa League quarter final tie with Lyon last month, Cresswell was sent off for bringing down ex-Fulham striker Moussa Dembele when last man, which saw him suspended for the second leg.

Fortunately, he returned for the semi-final games against Eintracht Frankfurt, but history repeated itself in the second leg in Germany when Cresswell was once again given his marching orders for bringing down an attacker when last month.

And Cresswell’s dismissal proved pivotal as West Ham conceded moments later and were eventually knocked out by the Bundesliga outfit, losing 3-1 on aggregate.

Despite his recent disappointments, though, O’Rourke believes that the left-back remains a part of Moyes’ plans moving forward.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “They’re probably looking at cover and competition at left-back, that’s why they’re looking around for that position, but you’ve got to remember how many assists Cresswell supplies from set pieces, so he’s still a key man for David Moyes.”
