West Ham: Moyes ‘most disappointed’ with £65m duo at London Stadium
West Ham United manager David Moyes will be more disappointed with injuries to two of his biggest transfers rather than the club’s failure to bring additional names to the London Stadium ahead of the September 1 deadline, according to journalist Dean Jones.
Moyes oversaw a steady stream of business in east London but failed to bring in reinforcements after a late push in the window.
This summer saw West Ham complete deals for Sassuolo striker Gianluca Scamacca and Rennes centre-back Nayef Aguerd, with a total of £65 million splashed on the duo.
However, neither have had a good start to life with the Hammers. The latter picked up an ankle injury against Rangers in a pre-season friendly and underwent surgery on the problem while Scamacca is in the midst of a battle with illness.
Moyes later confirmed that Aguerd would be out until the end of October at the earliest, leaving him short of his new defender.
Thilo Kehrer was signed from Paris Saint-Germain in response but when Craig Dawson told the club he wanted to leave ahead of the deadline, the Hammers were forced back into the market.
In response, West Ham were linked with Southampton defender Jan Bednarek, but the Poland international eventually moved to Aston Villa and Dawson stayed put.
Meanwhile, Scamacca has missed the last two clashes with Tottenham and Chelsea through illness, picking up a viral infection that has affected his gums and throat.
The 23-year-old had begun to impress his new fans, having scored in each of the club’s Europa Conference League qualifiers, but he too has suffered a setback.
Jones says that it will be the lack of action from both Scamacca and Aguerd that will be irritating Moyes the most at present.
