West Ham coach 'upset' by failed £30m move for Manchester United man

West Ham United assistant coach Kevin Nolan admits he was 'upset' to see Harry Maguire's prospective move fall through over the summer.

The Hammers saw a £30million bid for Maguire accepted by Manchester United at the start of August, having seen an opening offer for the defender knocked back beforehand. The 30-year-old looked set to leave Old Trafford, but the deal fell through amid a disagreement over his pay-off, with David Moyes' side moving on to other targets.

Maguire is yet to start a game for United this season, coming off the bench for 24 minutes against Arsenal before the international. break. While away on England duty, his own-goal against Scotland sparked yet more online abuse and Nolan admits its a shame the transfer fell through.

"I think it was very close," the West Ham coach told talkSPORT of the failed move. "I was a bit upset that we didn’t make it happen.

"I think it was just in the end, the money didn’t get sorted from what I can gather which is obviously upsetting from our behalf because we wanted to sign him. Probably upsetting from Harry’s behalf and probably United’s behalf as well."

Maguire now looks set to spend the season at United, although his minutes will be very limited. The England international ended last season as fifth-choice at centre-back behind Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw - that seems to have stayed the same.

In the summer, he was stripped of the captaincy by manager Erik ten Hag, who handed the armband to Bruno Fernandes as the Portuguese midfielder would be far more present on the pitch.
