West Ham: £17.5m 'livewire' offers Moyes 'something different' at London Stadium
West Ham United star Maxwel Cornet could become a London Stadium ‘super-sub’ as he is a ‘livewire’, according to journalist Paul Brown.
Hammers boss David Moyes spent more than £160million on bolstering his squad during the summer transfer window, with Cornet being among the fresh faces.
Cornet made the move to east London after West Ham activated the £17.5million release clause written into his Burnley contract last month.
It has emerged that the winger was convinced to join the Hammers after holding positive conversations with Issa Diop, who went onto seal a move to Fulham days later.
Moyes admitted to targeting Cornet, who penned a five-year deal which could be extended by a further 12 months, after he made a ‘big impact with his performances for Burnley last season’.
He has already made an impression in his new surroundings by chalking up two assists in the Europa Conference League.
Cornet also won a penalty as West Ham came from behind to beat Romanian side FCSB in their group stage opener on Thursday, but he required lengthy treatment and was substituted following his collision with goalkeeper Stefan Tarnovanu.
Brown believes Cornet will prove to be a shrewd signing by West Ham as he offers different attributes to the other wide players at Moyes’ disposal.
The journalist feels the Ivorian is set to be made to contend with a regular role on the bench during the early stages of his Hammers career, but it will not be long before he is a regular fixture in the starting line-up.
