West Brom player ratings as Grant & Carroll dig Albion out of the mire

West Brom mounted a late come-back to seal an unlikely point at home to promotion challengers Huddersfield Town - despite trailing 2-0 with seven minutes to go.

Karlan Grant’s penalty and then Andy Carroll’s stooping header - his first goal since arriving in January - 60 seconds later ensured that Albion left the field with a share of the spoils, after Danny Ward has sent Town into what appeared to be an unassailable lead.

On the face of it, it looks a decent point, though whether it’ll be enough to satisfy Steve Bruce is unclear - Albion were, for large parts of this game, particularly poor.

That said they did begin well, and looked to pick up where they left off at Hull. Alex Mowatt struck a beautifully timed shot on the volley, after Huddersfield only managed to clear the ball to the edge of their own penalty area, and it hurtled towards goal, only for Lee Nicholls to beat it away.

Town, second after a run of 16 league games without defeat, were compact if not spectacular and Albion continued to dominate in the first 20 minutes or so. Kyle Bartley acrobatically powered one effort over the bar and nodded another wide from Darnell Furlong’s long throw, but then - and not for the first time this season by any stretch - Albion shot themselves in the foot. In a big way.

Under no immediate pressure, Johnstone gave the ball to Bartley. He then immediately returned it. Striker Ward sensed uncertainty and bounded forwards to pressurise the Albion keeper, whose attempted clearance was too slow and only rebounded off the Town striker and into the empty net behind him.
