West Brom closing in on fresh agreement with 33-year-old

West Brom have had their struggles with goalkeepers over the course of the campaign – but finally, boss Steve Bruce could have settled on who is taking them forward as shot-stopper.

As reported by Birmingham Live, the Baggies are close to agreeing a deal with David Button that would keep him on at the club. That suggests that he is still held in high regard by Bruce and could play a part in their future plans going forward.

The main number one at the Hawthorns has been Sam Johnstone for the last four seasons and he has slowly established himself as one of the best in his position in the Championship.

He also impressed in the Premier League and it led to the former Man United man even being brought into the England national team fold.

However, this year it has been tumultuous inbetween the sticks for West Brom. Johnstone had a decent enough start to the season whilst the rest of his teammates faltered and then he too began to lose form.

With his deal set to expire, it looked like he could be off in the summer window and after a bust-up with previous manager Valerien Ismael he was left out of the team entirely. Steve Bruce brought him back but he has since been unceremoniously dropped again.

Instead, it has been David Button who has stepped into the breach and filled in. He’s played more games this season than he has managed in the last four seasons, with eight league appearances and 12 goals conceded. He is set to be rewarded now with fresh terms, with Bruce telling Birmingham Live that it is ‘positive on all fronts.’

The manager said of his contract situation: “I think we’re close. Until we officially say it, it’s not done, but I think it’s positive on all fronts.”

The Verdict

David Button might not be a first-team
