Welsh Rugby Union set to block Cardiff from signing promising SA flyhalf - report

Welsh URC outfit Cardiff are reportedly eager to sign Pumas playmaker Tinus de Beer to boost their flyhalf stocks for the 2023/24 season.

However, according to the Wales Online website, Cardiff are struggling to get the approval of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU).

According to the report, the WRU believes signing De Beer would hamper the development of up-and-coming Welsh flyhalves like Luke Scully, Harri Wilde and Dan Edwards.

As per a new Welsh rugby financial agreement, clubs need approval from their governing body when signing overseas players.

Cardiff had expressed interest in singing De Beer after Jarrod Evans' decision to join Harlequins and Rhys Priestland retiring.

The report added that Cardiff's primary targets were Sam Davies (Dragons) and Rhys Patchell (Scarlets), but they could not meet the wage demands.

De Beer, who was a star for the Pumas when they won the Currie Cup last year, has been in fine form again this season.

Before joining the Pumas, the 27-year-old also played for Griquas and the Bulls.

De Beer will start at flyhalf when the Pumas tackle Western Province at Athlone Stadium on Friday (17:00).
