Welling United manager Ryan Maxwell signs Isthmian Premier promotion winner Tyrell Miller-Rodney | Braintree next up in pre-season as Wings boss reflects on saving the Essex club from drop
Welling United have completed their squad by signing promotion-winning midfielder Tyrell Miller-Rodney.
The 32-year-old was part of the Billericay side who won the Isthmian Premier play-offs last season after finishing third behind champions Folkestone and runners-up Aveley.
He appeared as a trialist during the Wings’ friendly at National League South Maidstone on Saturday and is the final piece of the puzzle for boss Ryan Maxwell.
“He’s a player that comes to us off the back of a promotion last year,” said Maxwell, who expects the former Dartford man to be his final summer signing.
“He’s a robust, energetic midfield player with Step 2 experience under his belt.
“He’s a fantastic character, infectious, determined, and a player who I think adds another dimension to us. He can play a few positions as well.
“He’s 32 but as fit as a 22-year-old. He keeps himself in tremendous shape, he’s very professional and he was very keen to work with me, and I was delighted to hear that.
“I was very keen to get a player of that experience and recent success to add to our very strong squad.
“He’s off the back of personal success, he knows what it takes to get that, which will be great for the squad.
“He knows the league inside out and knows exactly what he’s signing for.”
Welling meet Maxwell’s former club Braintree in their next pre-season tonight.
The match will be played on 3G at the University of Greenwich, with the Wings’ Park View Road pitch not quite ready for action.
Maxwell worked wonders at Braintree, keeping the Iron in National League South against all the odds four years ago, an experience that’s shaped his management career.
“My time at Braintree was certainly a learning curve,” said Maxwell.
“We finished the season there
