Weight loss jab patients to face tougher checks after drugs ‘wrongly prescribed’

Weight loss injections have been hailed as “wonder-drugs” with the potential to reverse obesity levels in the UK.

Demand for the drugs has rocketed in recent months, with an estimated 500,000 Brits currently taking jabs such as Wegovy or Mounjaro, according to one of the biggest online sellers of the medications, Simple Online Pharmacy.

However, a shake-up of pharmacy rules will mean people wanting to buy weight loss jabs online will face more stringent checks.

The move follows reports that some people are being “inappropriately” prescribed weight loss injections. For example, the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) says it has been made aware of people who have previously had eating disorders being unnecessarily prescribed the drug.

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), which regulates pharmacies, has told online administrators of the drugs they can no longer prescribe weight loss jabs after reading a patient questionnaire, and must instead conduct a proper two-way consultation with the patient.

Pharmacists will have to verify the person’s body mass index (BMI) through a video consultation, in person, or through accessing GP or medical records. They will no longer be able to prescribe the drugs following an email chat, from questionnaires or by people sending in photos of themselves.

Duncan Rudkin, chief executive at the GPhC, said: “The message of this updated guidance is clear: online pharmacies should only supply a medicine if the prescriber has had an appropriate consultation with the person, and has made sure they have all the necessary information to check if that medicine is safe and suitable for them.
