'We've had information from a senior source' - Chris Waugh drops big late update at Newcastle

Newcastle United journalist Chris Waugh has given his thoughts on the situation regarding Dele Alli and a potential move to the club on Deadline Day.

Attacking midfield has been a position that Newcastle have been looking to fix during the window, with reports suggesting that they would make a run at Jesse Lingard. However, it appears as though that deal will not be a possibility, with claims emerging that he will stay at his current club.

Alli, who is thought to be close to a loan move to Everton, has also been seen as a target for Newcastle, with the Toon needing to add some extra firepower to their attack, which so far this campaign has managed to tally just 21 goals in their 21 games in the league.

Earlier on Monday, The Athletic had suggested they could yet hijack the Toffees’ move for the Spurs midfielder.

Speaking on a live stream for The Athletic, Waugh explained how Alli had been a target for Newcastle United for some time and that whilst they weren’t necessarily seeking a deal for him on Deadline Day, they might end up getting him at a later point if they feel the opportunity is right.

He said: “It’s interesting because we’ve had information from a senior source at the club today on two occasions, but before they went for Lingard and then they went for Alli, that that’s their business done. But Newcastle are still open if proposals are floated their way.

“So they’re exploring this with Dele Alli, I still think it’s late and I think it looks at this stage like they might fall short with it, but Eddie Howe ideally wants another attacker because Newcastle need to score and create more goals than they are at the moment, as well as keeping them out at the back.”
