'We've always disliked them' - Newcastle trio react to victory over Manchester United

Newcastle defender Dan Burn insisted the Magpies have "always disliked" Manchester United after defeating the Reds on Sunday afternoon.

Erik ten Hag's side, who beat Eddie Howe's side in the Carabao Cup final in February, lost 2-0 at St. James' Park, with the home side leapfrogging the Reds in the Premier League table. It was the third top-flight game in a row where United have failed to find the back of the net.

United were extremely disappointing against Newcastle, but the Magpies were deserving of their victory and showed why they are pushing for a Champions League spot this season. After the game, Burn - a boyhood Geordie - spoke about his delight at getting one over on the Reds.

"It’s really special. For a long time, we’ve always disliked Manchester United," Burn said on Sky Sports. "We’ve owed them one this season, so it was good to get the win today. As a Newcastle fan we were desperate to get the win.

"Over the seasons this [fixture] has always been one where we want to beat Manchester United. It was a great performance from the lads, I’m glad to get the win and the clean sheet."

Meanwhile, Wilson, who came off the bench to score the second goal of the game, admitted the defeat in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley hurt everyone involved with the club.

He said: "Yes, we were disappointed with the final. We know that had gone but it left a sour taste in our mouth. It was one of those things we had to put right, especially at home in front of our fans. We were fantastic, solid at the back, and managed to get two goals."
