We tried Yule logs from supermarkets including Aldi, Asda and M&S - one will make your Christmas Day

We’re not sure where the time has gone this year, but we’re now about a week away from Christmas Day. You may be one of those organised types who have already stocked up on festive treats like chocolate coins, Quality Street and Baileys, or like some of us, you’re more accustomed to the last-minute supermarket dash.

If it’s the latter, then fortunately for you we’ve taken some of the leg work out of buying those all-important Christmas staples by comparing a range of festive food and drink. That way, you can simply run to the shops and make a beeline for the products you want without the fear of purchasing a less-than-satisfactory treat.

While a lot of attention goes into those early turkey orders, stuffing balls and pigs in blankets, it’s worth making space for all those indulgent sweet treats too - even if you have to save them for Boxing Day. One of our favourites is the Yule log, an aesthetically pleasing addition to any festive spread, especially if you’re someone who dodges the Christmas pudding and brandy.

Crucially, when deciding our winner of this year’s yule log battle, we were looking for a sponge that wasn’t too dry and with good bounce, plus for the logs with buttercream, we wanted a pure cocoa flavour rather than something synthetic. Appearance wise, we’re not asking for much, but some kind of resemblance to snow-capped tree bark was also on our wish list. Overall, price, appearance and taste have been taken into account.

A caveat to begin.
