We tried supermarket mince pies and the cheapest was the tastiest - not Tesco or Asda

Mince pies are an essential indulgence during the holiday season, filled with scrumptious mincemeat enveloped in shortcrust pastry and often adorned with a festive motif.

Some incorporate alcohol for added flavour, while others stick to the basics with just dried fruits.

Given the plethora of options available, choosing the right one can be challenging.

To assist you in making your choice, Express.co.uk conducted taste tests on supermarket mince pies from Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Asda, Tesco, and Amazon to identify the tastiest option.

In order to ensure a fair comparison, we sampled the most affordable variety each store had to offer, all priced under £2, reports the Express.

Our taste testers were enamoured with the design of this mince pie, featuring a pastry-covered top adorned with a Christmas tree.

This was a departure from other supermarket designs this year, but it resulted in an excess of pastry, detracting from the mincemeat flavour.

It was significantly less sweet than the other mince pies, which some people might prefer.

These mince pies are sold at Sainsbury's stores for £1.70 for a box of six festive pies.

Asda's mince pies, priced at £1.50 for a box of six in a red festive package, didn't clinch the top spot among our taste testers.

We found them to have a balanced mincemeat-to-pastry ratio compared to other varieties, and they offered a satisfactory level of sweetness.

However, their slightly stodgy nature and the time it took to chew them prevented them from clinching the top spot.

Retailing at £1.50 for a pack of six, the same price
