We simulated Frenkie de Jong's debut season for Manchester United under Erik ten Hag

Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong has been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer following confirmation that Erik ten Hag will be Manchester United manager next season.

United announced the appointment of Ten Hag as their new manager last week, with the 52-year-old signing a three-year deal. United players are understood to be encouraged by the coaching credentials of Ten Hag, but there is some concern about whether the Dutch manager has the force of personality to turn United’s fortunes around.

De Jong has been rumoured to be one of United's top transfer targets this summer and could be persuaded to make the move to Manchester and be reunited with his former Ajax boss. Barcelona continue to struggle financially and could look to move the 24-year-old on this summer after making 136 appearances for the Spanish giants, scoring 13 goals and registering 17 assists.

To set up this simulation, we used the Football Manager 2022 editor to arrange for De Jong to join United at the start of the summer transfer window with Ten Hag as manager of United, using FM22 to run the simulation. Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Edinson Cavani, Juan Mata, Tahith Chong and Lee Grant were all released, whilst Nemanja Matic, Axel Tuanzebe and Anthony Martial were all sold.
