'We need...' - Parkhead legend urges Ange to address one 'important' issue in Celtic squad

Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie has called for further defensive reinforcements at Parkhead after the capture of Cameron Carter-Vickers. 

This comes in the wake of the Hoops confirming the permanent signing of the American defender from Tottenham Hotspur recently following a successful loan spell in Glasgow last season.

The 24-year-old forged a superb partnership with Carl Starfelt for the most part in 2021/22 as the Hoops lifted the Premiership title, conceding just 22 times in 38 matches in the process.

Despite the rock-solid duo and the now apparent prolonged future of Christopher Jullien at the club, one invested onlooker believes that Ange Postecoglou should still be on the lookout for further options…

Speaking to Football Insider, Celtic legend McAvennie – who won the top flight and the Scottish Cup with the Bhoys – has suggested that the squad is still in need of a defensive addition.

The 62-year-old said: “I am very happy with that (Carter-Vickers). I was always hopeful and it always looked on the cards. I would still like another one. What is going on with Jullien, I don’t know. He doesn’t seem to be in the manager’s plans.

“I think we need another centre-half, we need someone to compete with Cameron Carter-Vickers. That would really improve the team. You need competition for places. That is always a good thing. So, for me, that’s what I would do next because that’s important in my opinion.”

The permanent signing of Carter-Vickers is a sensational piece of early transfer business, but with the added pressure of Champions League football on the horizon, it’s imperative that Postecoglou has adequate strength in depth at his disposal going into the new season.
