'We must decide' - England give update ahead of crunch decision on Manchester United defender

Gareth Southgate refused to confirm whether Luke Shaw would start for England against the Netherlands on Wednesday night.

Shaw made his first appearance since picking up a muscle injury in February when coming on from the bench for England against Switzerland in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.

England equalised against Switzerland almost immediately after Shaw's introduction and many have called for him to start in the semi-finals against the Netherlands, as Southgate has picked Kieran Trippier, a natural right-back, to play on that side throughout the tournament.

Shaw has been the first choice left-back during Southgate's tenure as England manager, but reports claim he is likelier to start on the bench in Dortmund.

Southgate was asked about Shaw at a press conference on Tuesday and said: "Luke Shaw has been injured for four months, it wasn’t a possibility for him to play until the last match.

"He made a good contribution to the game and we have to decide if he is ready to start and whether that is the best way to use him but we are very happy to have him back.

"He gives us a different balance to the team, but Kieran Trippier has done a fantastic job. He's had many important nights with us over the last seven or eight years.

"He’s great around the squad, how he is with the rest of the players and the staff, and we are very fortunate to have players like him in our squad."

Speaking on Monday, Shaw said he was 'fit and ready' to start for England and confirmed he'd been in contact with Erik ten Hag and United during the tournament.

"Of course, I think I am [ready to play 90 minutes],” Shaw
