"We could be in New York right now - is it Manhattan or Manchester. Who cares?": Inside the new city centre bar hidden behind a fridge
Walk through the doors of a busy burger joint - and through a fridge door - and a series of steps will lead you down to one of Manchester's newest and most exciting bars: Ego Death.
In the basement of Super Awesome Deluxe, on Thomas Street in the Northern Quarter, the bar’s ethos is all about dropping your qualms - and your attitude - and settling in for a good night with good vibes and good drinks.
Fronted by renowned bar manager Cressida Lawlor, who previously worked at London Cocktail Club and Sexy Fish, the venue’s dimly-lit aesthetic pairs up with luxurious seats in candlelit corners and exposed brick walls with murals, mirrors and street art.

Stocked with an array of bourbon variations and Champagne, the venue takes its inspiration from the back-streets of New York while still paying homage to its Manchester roots and features an eclectic soundtrack blending funk, hip-hop, soul, disco, soft-rock and everything in-between.
The venue, in partnership with Super Awesome Deluxe and Almost Famous founder Beau Myers, is about ‘dropping all issues and self-awareness’ and is set to have an ‘no egos’ door policy with an 'anything goes' attitude.
“We want to build adrenaline and tension throughout the night,” Cressida tells the Manchester Evening News about the story behind Ego Death. “Before you know it, you’ve made five mates, you’re singing along to Fleetwood Mac and you’re having the best night of your life. That’s what everybody wants, right?”
