We Become Heroes: Annalise Murphy on overcoming setbacks

In the latest episode of We Become Heroes, Olympic silver medalist Annalise Murphy shares her journey through sailing and the inspirations and marker points along the way.

She details the challenges of dealing with the highs and lows of an Olympic Games and the reality of life after sport as she takes up new studies.

On her biggest setback, Murphy cited a period about a year before the Games when she struggled for form.

"My biggest setback was in 2015. I went to the Olympic test event and I was completely burnt out," she recalled.

"I'd put so much pressure on that the only way my life was going to be good was if I won an Olympic medal and it suddenly seemed so far away.

"In training I'd do really well and then we'd go to race and I'd do badly and I couldn't understand it.

"I went to the Olympic test event and finished last - like last, last. And the harder I'd try, the worse I'd do in a race.

"The first few days I was upset and then I came to accept that I was going to come last in every race. It was horrible. It was definitely the most miserable week of my life.

"But I also got to the end of the week and I realised I'm still the same person, my family still love me, I still have great friends, my coach still wants to coach me.

"It wasn't fun but it was a big lesson in the Olympics, they're not going to decide who you are as a person."
