Wayne Rooney tipped for shock new Premier League job with Man United reunion feelings clear

Wayne Rooney has been tipped to join David Moyes at Everton in an immediate return to football.

The Manchester United icon was relieved of his duties at Plymouth on New Year's Eve after just seven months in charge. A poor run of results left the club rock bottom of the Championship at that stage.

Moyes, meanwhile, has now been reappointed as Everton's manager, while succeeding Sean Dyche. His two-year spell in charge came to an abrupt end as the Toffees sit just one point above the bottom three.

In a statement confirming Moyes' return, the club stated further announcements on the manager's staff would be made in due course. Discussing the 61-year-old's potential right-hand man, talkSPORT's Alex Crook lifted the lid on who it could be.

"[Lee] Carsley won’t leave England Under 21s to be a No.2," he said. When ex-Watford player Troy Deeney tipped Rooney for the job, Crook added: "Yeah, I wouldn't rule that out."

Speaking about an emotional return to Goodison Park as a player in 2017, Rooney said: "I knew that coming back to Everton was more pressure - that's what I wanted. I wanted to prove myself again to the Everton fans and to try to help this club move forward and win silverware.

"I think it was the perfect fit for me and, hopefully, in the next two or three years we can do that."

It was Moyes who handed him his debut in the Premier League, some 23-years-ago against Tottenham.

Aged 39, Rooney will be keen to continue his coaching career following previous management spells with Derby County, DC United, Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle. But for now, he has been named as a new ambassador for Football Escapes.
