Wayne Rooney aimed a light-hearted dig at Gary Neville when explaining why he chose to become the new manager of Plymouth Argyle.

Rooney held his first press conference as coach of the Pilgrims on Thursday having been confirmed as the club's new head coach back in May. Since then, the Manchester United legend has been keeping busy with a range of punditry appearances on Sky Sports and BBC Sport.

The 38-year-old was also recently hired as a guest on Neville's Overlap YouTube channel, featuring Roy Keane, Ian Wright, Jill Scott and Jamie Carragher. With many opportunities opening up in the world of media following his disastrous spell at Birmingham City, many have questioned Rooney's decision to rush back into the dugout.

Shedding light on his motivation, he joked: "I don't want to become the next Gary Neville! I have a desire, a passion with football and a love for football and I've always had that.

"The last few months have been very strange for me. Since January it's been a real strange time being at home. I've done bits of TV work, but my real desire is to get back into management."

Commenting further on the style of play he wishes to implement at Plymouth, Rooney added: "I want to be an attacking coach, that's something I've always wanted to do, and to play entertaining football with control as well.

"I think my teams have always been very well organised but we play good football and team football. Of course you want to score goals, that's what everyone wants to see, and my style of play and how we play is all aimed to do that. So it's a lot of work now to get that into the players over the next
